Before I Forgot :NEW ORCHIDS

Yes, before I forgot......

The New ORCHIDS , A rebuted Monthly Japanese Orchids magazine, is really an eye opener, not just for you and me,but all who have some thoughts about orchiddddds.

Issues of January , March and later,November ,dating back to the year 2006, have an article writtened in 3 parts by Mr. Iio about wild orchids in Cameron Highlands, Malaysia.

Many Japaneses visited Cameron Highlands for mountain treasures and even 2nd home.But,Mr Iio came for the love of Orchids......

He ventured here many times,visiting friends too in Singapore and Malaysia,tapping the endermic trails of many wild orchids.Satisfaction of seeing blooms in the wild,discovering new species unexpectedly and even combing through the tornny rattan grounds for Phaius flavus , jewel orchids,or other terrestrials, ,all seemed to be part of his norms.A good mountaineering and sporty candidate too.

My concern is his latest update and activities.

Back to the Magazine....it's simply world class .

to me,it is an another formal post for proper Cameron highlands' wild orchids records.

Mr.Iio gave a good account on many wild orchids {grown in Tan's Camellia Garden} . Published for a record .Among them ,paph.barbatum ,paph lowii and coel.lobbii.........

Ency.polybulbon begins to bloom....

This must be the fifth year since I were presented with an overgrown orchid, Ency. polybulbon.

According to Tan, a Malaysian Japanese graduate with a Master Degree, this fellow has never flowered ,or never being able to flower in our tropical environment. But when potbound,it's cute and pretty too.....it came from Peru/Columbia's mountainous region.

Just last August,if I remember it correctly,it commenced flowering in neglect with barely 3 to 5 unpresentable blooms ; nothing exciting......just like many others in my trial collections.

Seeing some improvement, I stripped off about 1/3 of the growing shoots and roots,wrapped arounded with dry sphanum moss and transplated it into a newly prepared clay pot.

This year, as in the picture taken,the tranplanted plant is in a blooming mood....nice and flowered well ,look very much like an Exhibiting polybulbon in Japanese's NEWORCHIDS orchid magazine !!!

BUT, strange : the original plant never flowered !!! this prove technique and growing knowledge are important. Even temperature can be well suited, many odd to be done.......

You really need experience ,when it come to growing orchid....Orchids..... ORCHIDS.....

Especially with stranger orchids.....

coelogyne orchid

You are about to see this coelogyne spp orchids which can send out 200 hanging spikes with about 1000 or more blooms !!! Each spike can be very long too !!!

It is growing on the tree joint of two branching stems.

It has been growing there for some 16 years.

During our childhood time,we used to call this a " 36 blooms" orchid,as it has an average of 36 blooms in each hanging spike in our counting when we discovered it in the wild.

One perculiar fact is that it blooms earlier and faster when facing the sun;And the same goes from higher to lower elevation.

It is getting bushier and bigger each year,with more and perhaps longer spikes....

So, we wil lsee what happen during the mid-May blooming season next year.
